Here at Dean Gibson, we aim to provide all our children with a high quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), which develops their love and curiosity of learning about other languages and cultures. We feel it is important to foster a positive ethos which promotes bilingualism and we know that Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. The majority of the Secondary schools locally teach mainly Spanish and we hope to give our children a strong grounding in it before they reach Year 7.
A high-quality language education equips pupils to use a broad range of vocabulary in clear and developing ways, allowing them to understand and discover the world. Embracing children’s natural curiosity about language and the wider world allows them to develop their word knowledge and skills in a constructive way. Language- effective communication- is an essential tool in allowing our world to grow, therefore we think it is crucial that children continue to be curious and creative in their use of it.
The core of language is communicating; pupils are taught the principles of pronunciation and word knowledge, which will allow them to have a core basic understanding that they can apply in different situations and topics. We encourage children to recognise the importance of using different languages in an increasingly diverse world. We want children to embrace and explore other countries around the world, discovering where different languages are spoken and appreciating the history of the place. Children will learn about important individuals from different cultures and think about the impact they have had on our world.
Language also ensures that pupils become socially skilled – able to express themselves clearly and understand others from different walks of life– to become active participants in future life. Children will have opportunities to develop their language skills both in and outdoors: through taking part in a variety of activities children may develop their understanding inc. vocabulary of the outdoors, conversing with children from other year groups, interactive games outdoors etc.
Spanish Scheme of Work
The long term plan for Spanish follows the Twinkl Curriculum which supports delivery from Y3 to Y6 as per the national curriculum objectives.
